Advice from a New Hubber to a New Hubber--HubPages--Tips to Help Those New to the Community

Updated on August 30, 2012

Welcome to HubPages!!

Welcome to a Wonderful Community of Supportive and Encouraging Writers!!

On a personal note, while on HubPages, I have been so fortunate to have had the pleasure of meeting wonderful people that have encouraged many (including myself) to continue on with their writing as well as those that took the time to answer questions to assist newcomers. THANK-YOU!!!

Nearly 3 weeks and 30 Hubs later, I am by no means an expert on HubPages, however, I have learned a lot of information and hope to help those that are just starting out.

*Please note, as I find more information, I do plan on updating this Hub.

You Just Signed Up--Now What?

Congratulations you just took your first step in joining HubPages.

Now what?

First read through the Learning Center to become acquainted with the rules as well as read through a ton of information to help you succeed.

Next when you have become acquainted with HubPages, now it is time to write.

Start writing your first Hub.

  • Be sure to write on a topic that you know and that you are passionate about because it will show through in your writing as well as make your first Hub easier to write.
  • Be sure your title reflects what your Hub is about.
  • Be sure to read through your Hub for any grammatical, spelling, as well as check for any homonym mistakes for example: there or their.
  • Remember this is your first Hub and the first impression you will make on HubPages. I find it easier to check for mistakes by previewing the Hub.
  • Add pictures as well as other content and be sure to cite all of your sources. More information on image use can be found in the Learning Center.

  • Create a Summary and Add more tags that relate specifically to your Hub.
  • Do not just add tags that will attract visitors through search engines because that can be deceptive to your readers and can hurt your reputation as a writer.
  • Do NOT Publish your Hub just yet.

Research other Hubs similar to the topic you are writing about.

Read through Hubs that are similar to the topic you are writing about.

  • Be sure to comment on the Hub as well as rate the Hub if you find the information or the Hub itself Interesting, Useful, Awesome, Beautiful etc.
  • Please be politically correct and respectful at all times. The writer took the time to share the information with the Community.
  • Remember any comments that you write, the followers of that writer along with the followers of that Hub will be able to read them. You don't want to give a bad impression.
  • Take note of what you liked about the Hub other than the writing: example: other content such as pictures, videos, links etc.
  • If you really like the writer and are interested in their Hubs, follow the writer and that way you will be alerted to any new Hubs that they publish and you may never know, but they may start following you as well.
  • If you find a Hub that you think your readers will find interesting or if you feel that Hub extends the information your Hub offers, be sure to link it to your Hub.
  1. At the bottom of each Hub, click on link to this page.
  2. Copy the URL,
  3. Edit your HubPage
  4. Use the add link capsule
  5. Click edit and then Paste the URL in the provided area.

Now re-read through your Hub, look again for errors, add any new content as well as links you found useful. Preview your Hub so that you have an idea of what your published Hub will look to those reading. When done, Publish your Hub.

Great Your Published--Now What?

Now it is time to gain Followers.

If you published a fantastic Hub, you may gain followers that way also some writers will share your Hub with their followers and some may even share your Hub on social media sites.

There are also many kind and experienced writers that will follow you if you are new and respectful to others.

Other tips, post a link to your profile on social media sites such as Facebook and/or Twitter. If people like your Hub they will be sure to share the link.

However, one of the best ways to draw new followers in the beginning, is to Hop Hubs.

Hub Hopping

At the top of your screen click on Your Name then my account.

Similar rules do apply to Hub Hopping as they did during research.

  • Be sure to rate the Hub if you find the information or the Hub itself Interesting, Useful, Awesome, Beautiful etc. and definitely comment on those you liked. Writers do like to receive positive feedback and to know how people feel about their writing.
  • Please be politically correct and respectful at all times. The writer took the time to share the information with the Community.
  • Remember any comments that you write, the followers of that writer along with the followers of that Hub will be able to read them. You don't want to give a bad impression.
  • If you liked the Hub share the Hub with your followers.
  • If you really like the writer and are interested in their Hubs, follow the writer and that way you will be alerted to any new Hubs that they publish and you may never know, but they may start following you as well.

Note that by rating articles, commenting on other Hubs, replying to comments on your own Hub, Hub Hopping, will all help you to raise your Hubber Score.

New Changes to Hub Hopping 8/30/2012

HubPages now gives the options of how to Hop Hubs!!! If you feel confident in rating Hubs by Substance, Organization, Grammar and Mechanics, you can choose that option or if you would rather rate a Hub like you would for those you follow you can now click on the option of Access Classic Hopper!

This is where you can post a question to the HubPages Community or start a forum thread.

*Note: Do NOT post links to your Hubs or your Profile this is considered a big no, no!!

However, asking the question as well as responding to the answers you are provided may help you gain more followers. Again, ALWAYS be respectful regardless of what others may say. You don't want to get band from HubPages!!

Great You Have Followers--Now What?

Awesome Job!! You are well on your way, but there is much more to do. Hub Hopping, Reading Hubs of those you are Following, Commenting, Rating and Sharing, as well as posting as many well written Hubs a day that you can manage will lead you to continued success. It does take a lot of work and dedication!!

After you have Published a few (around 5 or so) well polished and thought out Hubs, now you may want to consider Applying for Google Adsense. This is one way to make make money on HubPages. Read this article first through theLearning Center and make sure you read through the terms and conditions before applying.

Google Adsense

Apply to Google Adsense.

Do NOT feel discouraged if Google Adsense does not accept your application at first. They will send you an e-mail explaining why you were not accepted. Be sure to follow the information provided in the e-mail. For example, you may need to polish your Hubs, check for any violations in the terms and conditions, or possibly need to publish more Hubs. They are looking for marketable content. If all conditions are met, apply again.

You may receive approval however, your account is still under review. Log into your Google Adsense account. You may see a red banner explaining that you are still under review. They may ask you to place blank ads in your HTML code on a few of your Hubs so that they are able to easily review your content.

After the review process, you may be accepted. But you must ALWAYS abide by the terms and conditions and NEVER click on any Google Ads on your Hubs!!!

Once accepted, you will need to configure your Google Adsense account.

  • Click on Your Name, then my account,
  • Click on Earnings, then Settings
  • Click on Configure

Great I am Signed Up--Now What?

Start adding Groups for your Hubs. This is a way keep your Hubs organized as well as when your Hub is Published a few of your Hubs in the same group will appear at the bottom of your Hub.

For example: If you write Poetry, create a group by the name of Poetry. Then in Assign Hubs to Groups drag the poem to that folder. When a poem is published at the bottom of that Hub there will be links to other poetry that you published. This is a great way of allowing others to read similar Hubs that you Publish.

Begin earning Accolades. Accolades are badges for reaching certain milestones on HubPages and can be earned in many different ways. Including by not limited to: commenting on others Hubs, writing a certain number of Hubs, page views of your Hubs, as well as contributing to the community.

Done, Done, and Done--Now What?

  • Continue to Publish quality (not quantity) Hubs
  • Continue to Add content or Edit previously Published Hubs
  • Continue Linking your Hubs with Others in the Community
  • Continue Hub Hopping
  • Continue Commenting and Rating Other Hubs
  • Continue to Show Loyalty to those you Follow
  • Continue to Share Hubs
  • Continue to Show Loyalty to those that are Following you
  • Continue to Reply to comments and/or messages.
  • Continue to Gain New Followers
  • Continue to Show Respect to Everyone--respect is earned!!

Conclusion

Remember this is NOT a get rich quick scheme!! It takes a lot of work and dedication! If writing is your passion than follow your dreams and NEVER give up!! All of your Hard Work will eventually pay off in the long run!

I hope this Hub gave you some information to help you become acquainted with HubPages. THANK-YOU for taking the time to read this; please feel free to comment and suggestions are always welcomed--HAPPY HUBBING!!!
